perfidy

"The meaning of life" said Botticelli, "is suffering, specifically the suffering of others."

...

"Ha," said Botticelli, "ha-ha-ha! You gain [their] trust, you refuse [them] and -- ha-ha -- you become what [they] knew you were all along, what you knew you were all along, not a friend, not a confessor, not a forgiver, but -- ha-ha! -- a rat!"

~ The Tale of Desperaux, p. 88, 90.

Ms. DiCamillo, brilliant and talented you are. So many times your words have spoken directly to my heart ... today, however, you broke it.

Our sorrows and wounds are healed only when we touch them with compassion.
Life is hard, how can we be anything but kind?
